Day Trip to Alcobaça, Nazaré & Óbidos

From a 12th-century monastery to a world surf capital and a medieval walled village.

From the UNESCO World Heritage Monastery of Alcobaça to Nazaré’s giant waves and Óbidos’ storybook medieval walls.

Alcobaça: monastic grandeur
We begin in Alcobaça, home to one of Europe’s best-preserved Cistercian monasteries and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in the 12th century, it holds stories of faith, royal power, and the ill-fated love of King Pedro and Inês de Castro.

Nazaré: waves and tradition
Once a fishing village, now world-famous for its record-breaking waves, Nazaré offers stunning views from the clifftop Sítio and a lively mix of surf culture and maritime heritage down by the shore.

Óbidos: a storybook walled town
A medieval village once gifted to queens, Óbidos charms with cobbled streets, whitewashed houses, and flower-filled corners — all wrapped within its ancient walls.

A relaxed day
This journey blends monumental heritage, Atlantic drama, and timeless village life — with time to enjoy each stop without rushing.

Sergio was a knowledgeable and thoughtful guide. We enjoyed learning about the history of the areas we visited. Walking through medieval Obidos was fun, and we enjoyed climbing on the city walls to see beautiful views. Nazare was breathtaking, and we loved watching a beautiful sunset at a beach on the way back to Lisbon. It was a wonderful day!

Our guide was so polite and informative, but never boring. He was on time, drove smoothly, and walked with us through Obidos and Nazare and Alcobaça so that we could learn about all of them. We were not left alone, though he was flexible if you would like that. All 3 places were amazing! It was the best day of our 12-day trip around Portugal! Worth the cost!

we had a fantastic day out with Sergio, visiting Obidos, Nazare and Alcobaca. it was clear that Sergio had a passion for his country with the detailed history he told us en route and so much information about the places we visited that we couldn't have gleaned had we travelled without a guide. we were taken to an amazing meal for lunch and then a couple of bars at the end of our tour. we left feeling like we had made a friend. thank you so much for making this day the highlight of our trip.

We had an excellent day with Diogo. He was at our hotel early, which made things easy for us. He was friendly, informative, and easy to chat with. It was a real treat to go on a tour with just us, because we could decide where to spend a little extra time. Diogo picked out the perfect lunch place for us, which was a real treat. I'd highly recommend!
