About Lisbon Experience - Crafted from City Life
To José Sarmento de Matos
From all of us at Lisbon Experience, and from me, personally, this is a tribute to the scholar who guided us in reading Lisbon’s soul. Through his books, José Sarmento de Matos revealed the city as an ancient, cosmopolitan crossroads, where a millennia-old openness is built into its streets and habits.
One of the great contemporary olisipógrafos (scholars devoted to Lisbon), his bibliography is almost entirely dedicated to this place we call home.
His work is the compass for our storytelling: respectful of memory, curious about difference, and attentive to the people who keep traditions alive today.
Because of him, our experiences look beyond landmarks to the living city, its craftspeople, neighborhoods, cultural actors, so travelers meet Lisbon as it truly is. He remains present in our daily work, shaping how we look, listen, and share. Obrigado, José. We carry your vision in every story we tell.
A Note from the Founder
I live Lisbon intensely. The city is my daily habitat, the organic markets at dawn, museum halls at noon, conversations that linger in the bairros by night. Over the years, I’ve become deeply woven into its social and cultural fabric. Travel shaped me: I seek difference, learn from people everywhere, and obsess over detail. I’m moved by history, fascinated by gastronomy, and genuinely passionate about our wines.
Lisbon Experience is how I share that life, here in the city and across its surrounding coast and hills, with the travelers who visit us. We curate small, thoughtful encounters shaped by long-standing relationships, from guides, artisans and chefs to historians and winemakers. Every program is crafted with care so the layers of Lisbon reveal themselves naturally, always with respect for those who call it home and with a positive impact on the local community.
The Mission, Vision, and Values That Unite Us as Partners
Our Values
We are guided by sustainability, social responsibility, transparency, ethics, innovation, and creativity. These values shape a unified vision for our work.
Our Mission
We are committed to offering unique and unforgettable experiences in Lisbon. Living the city intensely gives us the insight and responsibility to continuously enhance our offerings.
Our Vision
We believe in sharing, sharing values and benefits with Lisbon’s cultural and social actors. Our goal is for tourists to be seen as an added value to the city in every aspect.
Social Responsibility
Historic Lisbon is under pressure from gentrification. Tourism is part of that dynamic, so our duty is to be part of the mitigation. We design our experiences to channel attention and income toward the city’s small cultural associations, social-solidarity projects, neighborhood artisans, and independent businesses. We work at a human scale, honor fair compensation, and plan with residents’ rhythms in mind.
We operate an active social-responsibility policy: each season we pre-select Lisbon-based institutions and share a portion of our proceeds with them. This is not an add-on; it’s built into how we curate, price, and schedule. Our partners join under the same commitment, transparency, ethics, and tangible local impact, so that value circulates through the neighborhoods rather than concentrating in a few hotspots.
Mitigation only works when many small actors move together. That’s why we co-create with a network of craftspeople, cultural agents, social enterprises, and community groups, aligning our storytelling with their needs and capacity. The result is a premium experience that remains grounded: meaningful encounters, respect for place, and benefits that stay in Lisbon.
When we welcome travelers, we’re also supporting the people who keep the city alive. That is the standard we set for ourselves and for every partnership we build.
